The roman church of St Eulalie

Like many of the towns in this area, Montblanc dates back to Roman times
or even further when the Greek settlers first came and planted
vines and olives trees in the area.

There are no written records before the eleven hundreds but by that time
the town had three hundred inhabitants and a chateau with its church.

The ancient roman Via Domitia which linked Rome to Spain passes just south of the town.

The main industry is wine production. The town is surrounded on all sides by vineyards,
some belonging to individuals and some to the large Domaines.

In 1937 115 local wine growers got together and formed the Cave Cooperative of Montblanc
and it is here that the small growers bring their grapes at harvest (including us!).
